Bones: the backstory

So I've been watching season 1 just like I said I would, and taking notes, but right now, I have a theory that I need to share:

Brennan wrote her first book in order to cope with her relationship (or non-relationship) with Booth. (At least, that was part of it.)

This probably sounds like some crazy shipper delusion, but hear me out: in the Pilot, Brennan comes back from Guatemala and she already has a book published, which had not been published in the 100th episode flashback. Therefore, she must have written the book after the case with Booth and before she went to Guatemala, giving her only a few months to write since she was in Guatemala for some time (two months, was it?) and only 11 months total passed between the two cases that she worked with Booth.

Thus, either she writes like a speed-demon, or she began her book immediately following the case she worked with Booth.

AND at this point in the series (I just finished episode 5, the Boy in the Bush), we're starting to see what a big part of the book Agent Andy, who is based on Booth, is... meaning that even though they fought, Booth (and the whole experience of working on that one case with him) really stuck with Brennan, prompting her to write that book. Or prompting the content in the book. (We don't know why she began writing the books. Any thoughts?)

But either way, Booth was on her mind-- he was, in a sense, her muse.

So, why, in the Pilot, was Brennan reluctant to work with Booth again? I can think of many reasons, but here are a few:

a) She insists that her colleagues are NOT depicted in her book; she's in denial, or simply not consciously aware of the fact that they ARE.

b) She's a tough gal and never wants to give in easily.

c) She IS aware of her feelings and what she's done (I have no evidence of this, however); she's coped and now she wants to move on.

d) Some combination of two or three of the above reasons.

Thoughts?

if you're wondering why I haven't posted on the latest episode...

it's because I haven't watched it yet, because it's finals week, here in the non-Bones world, and I fear that watching it will

a) send me right into fetal position for the following days, thus limiting my study-time and possibly even causing me to miss a final

or b) cause my imminent psychotic break, which would me me quite unable to write top-notch essays on my anthropology exam.

so, maybe a and b could really be condensed into one super-reason, but I think you get the picture.

or, not, since no one seems to read this thing.

an inconsistency?

I was just watching The Shallow in the Deep over again, when I had to pause. Booth was wondering aloud to Sweets how he could have gone to bed Han Solo but woken up Obi-wan Kenobi.

Sweet's response? He has no idea what Booth is talking about.

However, was it not Sweets in the episode that just aired who referred to himself as a "Star Warrior" in the interrogation room?

Was this a mistake on the writers' part, or am I missing something?

Claim: Brennan and Booth "missed their moment"

That's what Sweets proposes in the 100th episode... and I like to think that the man is right about a lot of things.

This isn't one of them.

Let's consider that our duo hadn't "missed their moment," so to speak-- that Brennan hadn't gotten in the cab, or Booth had gotten in with her, and they went off into that pre-season 1 night and had sex. (Gasp!)

What then?

It's naive to think they would have fallen in love. Consider this: it's taken them 5 seasons (give or take) to affect one another enough to reach that point of true compatibility. Brennan, especially, has made enormous headway in that she almost completely accepts Booth's faith. This was absolutely NOT the case during season 1.

And pre-season 1? Not a chance!

Would this be enough to keep them apart/ break them up? Most definitely. In fact, I think it's one of the main factors that's kept them apart for so long. (Feel free to disagree!)

Now, back to the sex: They have it and then wake up. So, I ask again: what then?

Brennan, as we know, appreciates (and appreciated) taking care of her urges sans commitment (read: a one night stand of sorts, as they can last for multiple nights. She has people she can call, if you recall that talk she had with Booth in, I believe, that certain episode when she had two boyfriends. Good times.) So why would it have been different with Booth? She hardly knew him!

And likely wouldn't have gotten to know him much further, for they wouldn't have gotten to/ been forced to work together for so any years. (FBI policy, baby!)

So, even if Brennan did begin to see Booth as someone she wanted more than the occasional romp with, their relationship would have faced to many challenges that two people not forced together wouldn't have to deal with, making it easier to simply not.

Cut their losses.

Break it off.

So, yeah. That night could have been a moment, but it certainly wasn't THEIR moment. Despite what might be fun to believe, the stars weren't lined up perfectly for them; they don't do that for Brennan and Booth. They've had to WORK somewhat for their compatibility.

Their true moment has yet to come. (But I think it's coming soon...)

Bones promo

From Bones Addict (a WONDERFUL blog):

it's been a while...

I think it's because I conceived of this blog when I was in a bad place, Bones-wise. Surely, you can tell by my last post that I have a lot of issues I need to resolve on this front--changes to the show and the characters I need to accept-- before I can really move forward in discussing the series.

And so, I think this blog is going to take a turn-- one that I (truly) didn't expect... which excites me!

I'm going back. Back through the so-called "old-school" Bones episodes: back through the mystery of Brennan's parents, through Booths many romps, through the "Gorgonzola" ordeal. Back to Zack and Brennan's more bohemian look. Back through Cam's first cases, through Sully, through Brennan learning to trust and love.

I'm going back to the beginning, where it all started a mere seven months ago on a computer screen (via Netflix instant play): Season 1, episode 1. And I'm going to re-watch the series. Again.

(Can you believe that in such a short time I've re-watched seasons 1 and 2 four times, seasons 3, three times, and seasons 4 and 5 twice?)

Of course, I'll be watching with a different perspective now, one more knowledgeable. One more aware...

I'm not sure what I'll be looking for; I need to re-watch a few episodes of season 6 to figure that out (and when I do, I'll post a list as a reminder), but I know I want to look for fear-- for moments reminiscent of the end of the 100th episode (Booth willing; Brennan afraid)... of course, much more subtle. Much less intense.

I was inspired by 100daysofbones.wordpress.com... but it won't be like that, this new blog-turn. There will be no reviews, per say. No structured posts. Just what comes out...

I think. I'll know more next week. I just to say that this isn't the end, but the beginning-- like The Beginning in the End, but less heartbreaking.

ps. I want to make a shout-out to my first follower, because logging in today and finding that someone has, indeed, been reading, really encouraged me to be bold, live wide, and take this new direction.

So, thank you, and to you, I dedicate this post! :)

The Bones That Weren't: a rant-review

So the Bones episode from Thursday...

WTF?!?

It just became my least favorite episode of Bones... as well as one of my least favorite episodes of any TV show.

Maybe I'm biased, because this episode was really heavy on the Hannah. REALLY heavy. She and Booth just kept kissing and kissing and being all couple-y, and as an avid B&B shipper, I didn't appreciate that.

Also, the fact that the episode provided two chances for Hannah to die, but she didn't, got on my nerves a bit.

And then at the end she and Brennan were talking like friends. I think that was the worst part for me, because it either means that a) Brennan's feelings for Booth simply aren't strong enough for her to feel malice towards Hannah or b) that Brennan actually likes her. And if Brennan likes her, then that makes her compatible with Hannah, and since she's (obviously) compatible with Booth, by the transitive property, that would make Booth truly compatible with Hannah.

I think.

And that will make her a hell of a lot more difficult to get rid of. I mean, why would Booth want to break up with her? He wouldn't. He won't. It will be her-- it HAS to be. And since she is so enamored with Booth, she'll have to tire of her current job.

Or Brennan will have to tell her to back off, but I doubt that will happen.

So, really, this wasn't a bad episode. I mean, I did have some nice laughs (especially in the beginning: the clam, the knife, etc.), but it scared the sh!t out of me. And made me just slightly depressed. Simultaneously.

If Hannah doesn't disappear shortly after the holiday break (at the very LATEST), I might need to start drinking while I watch this show... or suffer a psychotic break. We'll see.

insight of the day

The people who are the most troubled are also the most adept at pretending they aren't.

^^^ It sounds like it could be a fortune cookie, right? Perhaps, I could have a career in writing those...

a fun fact

In 4 years, I will be the proud owner of an Ivy League degree. However, I'm studying English (creative writing) and anthropology, so I likely won't have a job.

I don't know what that means...

If you watch Bones, however, you DO know what my title means... at least, you understand the reference.

I have no idea what this blog is going to be about. Nada. Maybe I'll post some poetry, some random pictures I take... I have not a clue.

Besides, those two ideas sound sort of boring, don't you think? I mean, they've probably been done to death!

This blog is going to be new and exciting and I'm going to be new and exciting... so follow me! And I shall lead you down a path to, well, who the hell knows! But I promise that the journey will be fun.

Cheers,
